Transactional Platforms

  • Transactional platforms are deeply embedded in customer and vendor workflows
  • Facilitate the connection for two parties to transact with each other
  • Inherently integrated, but API-led strategy can further expose the platform to third parties who benefit from access

Systems of Record

  • Systems of record store critical customer or operating data and drive internal workflows
  • APIs allow partners and vendors direct access to data or seamless integration into customer’s existing workflow
  • “Embedded” platforms offered as public APIs for developers to build on

Data Platforms

  • Unified analytics and data platforms consolidate disparate data sources into intelligence
  • APIs allow for ingestion and distribution of valuable data, ability for others to build applications leveraging unified data, and provide access to the platform to participate in high usage by end-customer (e.g. plug-ins)

Workflow Automation Platforms

  • Automation platforms are built to automate specific tasks and workflows
  • APIs allow partners and developers to gain functionality directly instead of building it themselves
  • APIs used for internal consumption or as embedded functionality in applications
  • Often produce revenue directly for API consumer
